Mondello Race Day August 2002

At the beginning of August, Lough Neagh Car & Tarmac Rally Marshals' Club held its annual race day at Mondello Park race course, County Kildare.  This is the second time the club has been invited to the race track to be entertained by some of the best rally drivers in Ireland.

The event was organized in 2001 as a result of the outbreak of foot and mouth disease. All rallying events around the country were cancelled because of the fear of transmission of the disease off farm lands.  It was felt that marshals who had given up their time to the sport should be rewarded by the drivers. After some co-operation by the clubs and drivers it was decided that the clubs would go to Mondello Park and be given the chance to experience rallying at first hand inside rally cars.

Bus transport to the track this year was sponsored by Murray Motor & Windscreen Services, Magherafelt and after a safe and pleasant journey racing began at 10:00a.m.

The rallying was organized into three classes:-

Class 1 - Front Wheel drive e.g. Austin Mini Coopers, Peugeot 106, Vauxhall Corsa

Class 2 - Rear Wheel drive e.g. Mk2 Escort, Toyota Corolla Twin cam

Class 3 - FWD WRC e.g. Ford Escort Cosworth, Mitsubishi Evo V/VI, Subaru Imprezza

To be at this wonderful race track in some of the fastest cars in the sport  with the top rally drivers doing speeds in excess of 150mph on the main straight, for many members this was a dream come true. Each member got the chance to experience these powerful, high reving cars at their best.

As with all good things the day ended at 4:30p.m., the club officials paid tribute to the work of the Mondello Park staff, drivers and their service crews, some of whom had traveled from a great distance to be there and to give us such a wonderful day.
